Edinburgh Hogmanay 2026/27: Getting to & From the Celebrations

The world's biggest New Year party runs 29 December – 1 January. Here's how to plan transfers around it.

Edinburgh's Hogmanay is widely considered the greatest New Year celebration in the world — and it's early enough in the year to start planning now, especially if you're flying in from overseas. This year's festival runs from 29 December 2026 to 1 January 2027, four days of torchlight processions, concerts, and the famous Street Party culminating in fireworks over Edinburgh Castle.

Why This Isn't a Normal Airport Run

On Hogmanay itself, Princes Street and the surrounding streets close to traffic for the Street Party — this is one of the biggest planned road closures in the city's calendar. If your accommodation is anywhere near the city centre, or you're flying out on 1 January, this significantly affects how you get around that night and the following morning.

Taxi availability also drops sharply on 31 December as demand spikes across the whole city — this is genuinely the single busiest night of the year for private transfers in Edinburgh.

Book your airport transfer for both directions as early as possible — 31 December fills up faster than any other date in the calendar
If you're flying out on 1 January, allow significant extra time — city centre road closures often aren't fully lifted until late morning
Staying in the Old Town or near Princes Street? Confirm your nearest accessible pick-up point when booking, as some streets are pedestrianised for the Street Party
Dress warm and check the forecast — outdoor events go ahead in most weather, but it is Scotland in winter
Travelling as a group for the celebrations? Book one larger vehicle rather than splitting into separate taxis on the busiest night of the year

Many visitors arrive specifically for the 29–31 December window and fly out shortly after New Year.
