Getting a taxi from Edinburgh Airport is easy in one sense: there is a rank outside the terminal and black cabs are usually waiting. The catch is the meter. The final fare depends on traffic, the time of day and your destination, and you only find out what you owe when you arrive. A pre-booked taxi works the other way round: you see the price first, you pay that price, and your driver is waiting for you.
This page explains your taxi options at Edinburgh Airport, what each one costs, and how to book a fixed-price taxi in under a minute.
Taxi Rank vs Pre-Booked Taxi
Both get you to the city centre in 20–30 minutes by road. The difference is certainty.
| Taxi rank (black cab) | Pre-booked taxi (us) | |
|---|---|---|
| Price | £20–£40 metered, plus airport pick-up charge | Fixed £40 to the city centre, confirmed before you pay |
| Night rate | Higher tariff in the evening, on Sundays and public holidays | Price shown at booking is the price you pay |
| Waiting | Join the queue at the rank | Driver waiting in arrivals with a name board |
| Flight delays | Not applicable | Flight tracked, pick-up time adjusted at no extra charge |
| Groups & luggage | Standard cab | People carrier or minibus for up to 9 |
| Booking | None needed | Online in under a minute, free cancellation up to 24h |
Metered fares are typical ranges and vary with traffic. For a full breakdown see our Edinburgh Airport taxi price guide.
